As part of the National Research Council (NRC)'s Canadian Indigenous Languages Technology Project, the Indigitization Program worked collaboratively with communities and other specialists in project planning, archiving, content management, and digitization, to expand their Toolkit to include multiple additional media formats and practical manuals for recording and archiving. For this project, Daisy Rosenblum and BA Student Kathryn Dyck wrote a guide to transcription and translation for community-based language projects. The manual provides advice on how to transcribe and translate Indigenous languages in digitized audio and video recordings. We make suggestions about how to plan and budget for transcription and translation in a project; offer a detailed description of how to use ELAN, a powerful, free and open source transcription software; and provide a sample workflow for structuring a project to create documentation that will be available for future generations.
